My goal is to discover gluten-free food in the District to make your gluten-free diet easier.
1409 T Street, NW, Washington, DC 20009
What I got: Two tacos, one with steak and one with egg and green chile on corn tortillas. If you find the number of possible toppings as overwhelming as I did, the staff is happy to recommend certain items specific to your taco choices.
Gluten-free friendliness: The corn tortillas used for the tacos are gluten free, but the quesadillas are made with flour tortillas. The menu also features a mixed green salad, and you can add your meat of choice to maximize your protein intake.
Overall vibe: Located in an old US postal office, Taqueria Nacional balances a beautiful new space with historic charm. The trash can, for example, is a post office box. The spacious room offers plenty of seating, and there are even stone benches around a fountain outside. When the weather is nice, the large front window opens up and you can have a front row seat to the bustling activity on 14th street. The only major downside is the price. There are definitely cheaper places to find lunch, but your stomach will thank you for trying this place at least once.
Gluten-free gut reaction: Would go back.
